Never Eat Shredded Wheat

How did you learn about the points of the compass and their order? Here’s another question for you: did you ever have or do you still have a person who is a guiding north star for you? I have had that. I also found out recently that I had been that for someone else. It’s a tough role to play, especially if you’re a human and you make mistakes.

But our mistakes are all too often our best teachers. And I’m doing better now, thanks…

Almost True North

Falling off the compass needle
Clinging on and falling east
Swaying west
Almost true north
But not quite

The fields are scattered with
Magnets
Flickering the needle
Sown with tears
Planted with feathers
Growing into wings
Blown east, blown west
Headed south for winter
False north
And gone

Waiting for the heavens to realign
I did not know I was a compass

I did not know that I could lead anyone astray
That my position
Had an influence
On any other traveller
But me
And I was lost anyway

Almost true north
Then lost to the very concept of direction
How do I get to where I thought I’d get to?
Well I wouldn’t start from here

True north is a story
I hope it has a happy end –
Almost true north
But not quite
